SOFTWARE AOL Instant Messenger
You don't have to be an America
Online member to experience the immediate cross-Internet communication made possible by
AOL Instant Messenger. This program allows Internet users to communicate via private,
personalized text messages, and indicates when friends, family members, and business
colleagues are online. AOL Instant Messenger combines AOL's popular Buddy List and Instant
Message features, enabling users to send and respond to messages immediately. Other
features include a user directory and buddy chat capabilities, personalized news, and a
Neighborhood Watch feature so that you can disconnect when crank chatters contact you. New
features in this version include tickers that stream news headlines and stock quotes
through a separate window, Buddy Icons that allow you to use graphics to represent
yourself in your buddies' instant-messaging windows, and a feature that lets you stay
connected to the service even if your Internet connection is briefly cut off. Version 4.0
introduced the ability to share photos, pictures, sounds, and chat with friends and family
or people with similar interests. A new feature called AIM Talk was also added, allowing
you to enjoy live conversation online.
New features added to the most recent version
include an easier, more convenient Buddy List that lets you access your complete and
combined Buddy List from any computer you use; and online head-to-head gaming that allows
you to use your buddy list to organize and launch your online gaming sessions.
ICQ
· ICQ 2000b is the latest release of ICQ ("I seek
you"), the popular instant messaging program that lets you communicate with friends
and colleagues in real time. To seek out a friend on the ICQ network, simply enter his or
her ICQ number, name, nickname, or email address. Once your contact list is set up, you'll
be notified when your friends are online so that you can chat; send instant messages,
files, and URLs; play games; or just hang out.
· This update features an improved connection and
additional firewall settings.
mIRC 5.71
· mIRC is a configurable IRC client that has an intuitive
user interface, an events handler, and full send and receive capabilities for DCC (direct
client connection) files. It also has color text, aliases, remote commands, a backgrounds
option, and sound. It automatically opens Web sites as they are mentioned in a
conversation, ignores DCC Sends that match specified filenames or types, and locks the
program to disable various features.
· Version 5.7 featured an improved lock feature, improved
support for IRCX servers, the ability to roll and unroll windows, a new pop-up menu, bug
fixes, and more. |

| BROWSERS Netscape Communicator 4.7
· Communicator 4.7 is the latest release
of the Internet software suite from Netscape. In addition to the Netscape Navigator
browser, Communicator includes a complete set of tools for effective everyday
communication. Features include Smart Browsing; a three-paned, integrated mail and news
interface; roaming access; pinpoint addressing; and a scalable address book (to avoid any
compatibility problems, you should back up your old address book). Communicator also
offers the ability to download newsgroup articles for offline use, fully operational
roaming support, and a Quotes Anywhere feature that allows you to access stock quotes via
your Netcenter portfolio.
· Version 4.7 now
includes the Winamp MP3 player. Other new features include a Netscape Radio service that
allows you to listen to live radio stations, and a new Shop toolbar button that provides
quick access to the Netcenter Shop@Netscape area. In addition, version 4.7 the latest
versions of Real Player G2, AOL Instant Messenger, and the Shockwave and Flash players.
Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5
· Internet Explorer 5.5 includes support
for Dynamic HTML, Java, and the Channel Definition Format (CDF). An AutoSearch feature
lets you choose your search engine and display search results in different ways. For
example, you can choose to be redirected automatically to the best-matched site. In the
History box, you can sort the list of sites by date, site, most visited, or the order
visited. The AutoComplete feature displays a drop-down list of matching sites when you
start to type a URL in the address bar. AutoComplete also works with Web forms, displaying
a list of previous entries when you start to type in a field on a Web site. To automate
login processes even further, you can also save usernames and passwords for particular
sites. Internet Explorer offers 128-bit encryption and includes a Radio Toolbar, which
allows you to listen to radio stations over the Internet as you browse. IE also allows you
to select the default email, calendar, newsgroup, and HTML editors of your choice. You can
even designate your Web-based email provider as the default email program.
· Version 5.5, the latest in this Web
browser line, includes improved support for DHTML behaviors, as well as additional support
for vertical text and existing standards such as Cascading Style Sheets (CSS 1). IE 5.5
also features additional support for the Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language
(SMIL). A print preview feature has been added, as well as improvements in printing
performance and several Internet enhancements that will be included in the upcoming
Windows Millennium Edition. This build introduces new language features in JScript and
VBScript, and a frames re-architecture. |
